Blue Bunny 'Guilty Conscience'"Chocolate Ice Cream Swirled with a Peanut Butter Ribbon and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups"
![]() |
KRIS - I continue to support Blue Bunny's container design. It's the same "almost half-gallon size" like the other brands, but it's skinny and fits really well in to freezer doors (easy access). Guilty Conscience mixes peanut butter and chocolate, one of my favorite combos but they missed the mark when it came to the peanut butter ribbon. The peanut butter is not sweetened. Remember when you got a Palmer's Easter PB-Choc treat instead of Brach's? Yeah, like that. Disappointing. The chocolate tasted more like regular milk chocolate instead of dark (but Fred thinks that's because I think anything is watered down if it's not 70% cocoa). The saving grace were the peanut butter cups. They were very tasty and a good sized chunk. This was barely a cone up for me. |

FRED - How can you not love an ice cream described with so much chocolate and peanut butter? The picture on the container certainly made it that much more attractive. I love Blue Bunny's "Fresh Lock," but I question the "Critic's Choice." Who are these critics? Do tell! There was some shrinkage and I didn't really see the ribbon or peanut butter cups initially, but the ice cream has an overall peanut butter cup taste. It makes me wonder why they didn't just call it "Peanut Butter Cup" ice cream. Oh well, it was still really good and I'd buy it again. |

Haagen-Dazs 'Five: Brown Sugar' "A rich brown sugar flavor, with light caramelized notes." Super Premium Ice Cream • Ice Cream Web Site |

The packaging is different from their regular line and makes sure that the emphasis is on the word "Five." The word "Five" is bigger than the actual flavor! So what are the fab five ingredients you ask? They are milk, cream, sugar, eggs and brown sugar. Seems pretty basic and the packaging compliments this notion. Big plus for the packaging matching the message!
Haagen-Dazs is usually up there in fat content, but Five boasts only 35% Daily Saturated Fat Value. They have my attention. I am a bit concerned about the texture at this point. My full expectation would be that it's a gritty-airy texture. After tasting, it's clear that there is no grit what-so-ever, which baffles me. It was creamier than expected! Pretty good texture for a "diet" ice cream.
The taste was of cream and molasses. It's super sweet and not for me! Ever sneak any brown sugar and butter batter off the spoon when baking? I was hoping for that, a blander, less sweet taste. This flavor was uber-sweet and over powering. I was done after three bites. The best thing I could get out of this flavor is that it would be great as one of those liquid coffee creamer flavors sold in the dairy department of the grocery store. I am looking forward to trying other Haagen-Dazs Five flavors. The right flavor with the lower saturated fat amount and more natural ingredients seems like a win-win.

There is little argument that Haagen-Dazs has some of the best packaging in the industry and their "Five" ice cream is no exception. A clean, white container without a lot of text and decoration and a simple picture of a lump of brown sugar works well with the idea of an ice cream with a limited ingredient list. The gold-rimmed lid gives just the right touch of class that is associated with the Haagen-Dazs brand.
We opened the container and removed the safety seal and the ice cream inside looked pretty much like what I expected "Brown Sugar" ice cream to look like. Lighter in color than the lump of brown sugar pictured on the container, the ice cream looked similar to cinnamon ice creams I've seen from other companies.
The first taste of Haagen-Dazs' "Brown Sugar" ice cream was eye-opening. It tasted like straight-up, cold brown sugar. The second taste and all subsequent tastes had the same impact, which was a bit of a shock to my tastebuds. One thing I noticed was that the molasses of the brown sugar seemed to come out a lot and it made me think of ginger snap cookies.
After three to four tastes of this ice cream, I was done. Unfortunately, the taste is more overwhelming than it is good. And while it's a smooth ice cream, I found myself getting a bit of a dry mouth, like eating fiber cereal.
Overall, the presentation is much better than the product. I can only imagine that you have to be the kind of person that will reach into the bag of brown sugar and grab a chunk to eat straight-up with nothing else in order to like Haagen-Dazs' "Brown Sugar" ice cream.
