Ben & Jerry's 'Key Lime Pie'

"Lime Ice Cream with a Tangy Lime Twist, Fluffy Meringue Swirl and Pie Crust Pieces"

KRIS - I thought Fred was not going to make it from the house to the tasting site with the pint of Ben & Jerry's Key Lime Pie ice cream in tact! He was so excited to try this flavor and I am so glad we shared it together for a review! This flavor has a lot to hold up to as Key Lime is not forgiving and doesn't have any variations to true lovers of the flavor. The packaging is fun and has lots of flair, but upon opening it, I couldn't smell anything resembling lime or citrus. What I saw was a loaded pint full of creamy ultra-pale yellow (the right color of key lime juice) ice cream speckled with chuncks of crust and a very, very thin stripe of meringue. I confess to being nervous about the meringue because I typically scrape it off of pie and subsequently have never appreciated it. There is usually just too much, stacked so high you can't get it in your mouth with the actual pie filling at the same time!

I tell you, upon tasting the ice cream...delightment ensued! This Ben & Jerry's Key Lime Pie ice cream tastes just like the real pie! When making my Key Lime pie, I put a little more lime juice and there is more of a zing-wow-pucker. This is milder than a pie's tang and this means one thing; you can eat a lot of it! The pie crust is grahammy and not soggy. The meringue swirl is just right and the ratio of additions to ice cream was perfect. I hope this doesn't stay a "Limited" flavor.

FRED - From the outside, Ben & Jerry's Key Lime Pie ice cream looks like any other ice cream from the ice cream duo. There's pie and limes and clouds and a cow and there's a feeling of, yeah, yeah, yeah, I've seen it and am intrigued, now on to the ice cream! On to the ice cream, indeed, especially since this is a "Limited Batch."

After opening the container, I noticed that the Key Lime Pie ice cream seemed to look right (color, pie chunks, etc.) and had a faint smell of Key Lime. However, I didn't notice any meringue... until I took my first bite. I'm not overstating it to say that every bite of Ben & Jerry's Key Lime Pie ice cream was a delicious mixture of Key Lime ice cream, meringue, and pie crust. Over and over in my head, I was screaming, "THIS IS KEY LIME PIE!!!" The chunks of pie crust in every bite helped to sell the idea as it made the ice cream seem just like the real deal.

An actual Key Lime pie might be cheaper, but the ice cream version is just as delicious, if not slightly more so.
